Drug Dealers in Costa Rica

October 5th, 2008

This is a continuation from my main blog.

Costa Rica is full of drug dealers.

In the tourist areas people still make $2 an hour for average job.

3rd world meets 1st world.

Tourists come, and the demand for cocaine comes with it.

The bad thing is that this drug dealing effects the way of life of the locals.

In my case is doesn’t, I am a local, people know me, but when a “gringo” comes here, people will look at him and try to figure out his weak spot.

“What you need, bro? Coke, girls? No girls? I can get you some boys!”

Needless to say, it leads to more, such as Pedophilia tourism.

The local gringos now get more involved in getting the bad elements out of the community, but it’s hard considering that so many of them grew up here and have family all over.

Many believe it’s the gringo’s fault for creating this demand and to some extent it’s true.

I go to a party, hang out with some of the locals and immediately someone asks me “Hey, bro … where do I get some good blow here?”

and if I say

“Nah dude, I don’t do that stuff.”

the reply is usually

“Just point me to someone who has it who won’t burn me and I buy you a couple of drinks.”

By then usually a local dealer has spotted us an walks up to the guy saying “Que pasa?” and the tourist asks me “Is that guy gonna do me right?”.

So you can see that people here won’t have to hustle to sell drugs. The deals come to them more or less.

It leads to so much more than simply the switch from being a bartender who sells drugs on the side to becoming a full time dealer.

It changes the mindset of society.

I go to areas without tourists and people are great. I go to a tourist area I have never been to and it makes me sick to the stomach. Like those two guys I met in Puerto Viejo who tried to pull their game on me.

Their family actually has a lot of land for sale in Puerto Viejo, or rather up in the mountains, but dealing with those guys was SO frustrating, I am talking to them thru a local realtor now who knows them.

Black & White on the Grey Matters 2 (War)

So many of you may have read about Costa Rica being the hottest real estate market in the world, but the truth is that not every spot in Costa Rica is hot. Investing in overbuilt areas like Jaco is not recommended since current homeowners willing to sell are unable to get rid of their properties for the price purchased.
So where in Costa Rica should you invest? Only one place, the Nicoya Peninsula.
The Nicoya Peninsula features excellent areas such as Malpais, Santa Teresa, Cabuya and it has its business center in Cobano.
Cobano is where you have to go to get to the beach neighborhoods. You enter the Nicoya Peninsula by ferry coming from San Jose and the ferry ride is about 1 1/2 hours. Tambor is where you can find the Barcelo resort and Las Delfinas. It’s where you go golfing and a new marina is being built. A new marina is also being built in Cabuya.
The Nicoya Peninsula is THE place to invest in now.
Puerto Viejo also is recommended and so is the Peninsula de Osa/Povones.
Those who have never been to Costa Rica, should visit Malpais. Malpais is where the jungle meets the beach.
The perfect place to chill. Close to the surf spots of Santa Teresa, Cabuya and Playa Carmen the ideal place to get away from it all and visit the action when you want it.
Nightlife is fantastic in those surrounding areas. One road leads from Cabo Blanco National Park thru Malpais, Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa which you can follow all the way thru to Manzanillo and even Samara.
Once the roads are fixed, real estate prices will go up and you will be able to sell your land for a lot more.
There is a quick road from Malpais to Cabuya, the Cabo Blanco park is the southern tip of the peninsula bordering on Cabuya on the other side.
The Nicoya Peninsula also features great mountain areas and villages where you can buy land cheap and enjoy the scenery of Cerro Frio and be close to Cobano and the beach cities.
Why do I recommend the Nicoya Peninsula?

I recommend it because for the past 2 years I have seen it grow in the speed of light. I have seen the amounts of tourists double and half of the commercial buildings there now were not there when I have first arrived in 2006.
Costa Rica is where 3rd world meets first world. Currently I am in the San Jose area for business, and everything you need you can find there. Beach areas are where you find the biggest contrast between locals with low funds and U.S. celebrities like Mel Gibson and Leonardo di Caprio.
The “Yes” on CAFTA promises huge economic growth for Costa Rica.
You have to be here to see it, understand it and most of all feel it.
One thing I have once read is that the biggest assett Costa Rica has is its people and I agree 100%.

I believe that Costa Rica is going to change. Not too much but quite a bit. Costa Rica is one of those places where you can feel that life is evolving and turning into a more American way of life. I like the fact that people are so laid back here. It is not always the most efficient way to do business, but then again we have enough of that abroad.

I would like to know more from all of you what inspired you about Costa Rica and what keeps you coming back.

Puerto Viejo

March 9th, 2008

You have to be here to feel the difference between Puerto Viejo and the Pacific side. Puerto Viejo is a chill spot, very carribean, rasta and reggea type of place.
If you go to Puerto Viejo, stay at Kaya’s Place.
